What actually is a covenant; and is a covenant like anything we do nowadays?

people in modern times have lost touch with what a covenant means... these are the times of broken promises and its normal ... in times past if u made a covenant with a neiboring tribesman to protect him and when the time came u did not and broke the covenant ... then u would be hunted till they killed u ... they took it much more serious ...
